Happy Birthday to All! August 29, 2007

Filed under: Exciting Goings On — Becky @ 7:40 am

Just wanted to say a quick Happy Birthday to half the family!  I tend not to call people on their b-days not because I’m not thinking of them, but because I sincerely hope they are too busy having fun to talk with me!!!  Would you believe Greg’s brother’s b-day is today too?  Its too much!  So I’m thinking about Kris, Rachel and of course William and hope they’re having a great week.  And I really hope everyone is having cooler weather than I am, I fear I may burst into flames today.

Love to all, B

September Visit August 22, 2007

Filed under: Get-Togethers, Trips and Visits — Becky @ 7:50 am

Just to let everyone know, I purchased my plane tickets for my September visit for Grandma’s b-day party.  I’m flying into KC on Thursday, and Greg and I will drive out to Illinois on Friday or Saturday morning.  Maybe we can plan a get together with Kris’s family on Saturday late afternoon/evening?  Greg and I will leave Monday morning and I fly back on Tuesday.  Its to short of a trip unfortunately, but I’m glad to be able to see everyone at least briefly before the winter holidays!

I started my TA duties this week and I’m way busier that I imagined I would be.  I’m hoping things will be less stressful after my big presentation tomorrow, but something else always comes up!  Hope everyone is having a great week!

B

Greg thought that title would be a clever way to refer to dad’s idea that he is NOT paying for our wedding!  And given how much I laughed in response to him saying it, I thought it was pretty darned funny too!

In other Becky news:

  • Yes, I will be coming out for G-G’s birthday party.  I haven’t purchased the tickets yet, but the plan is to fly into K.C. on Thursday and then drive to Illinois on Friday.  I think we’ll then drive back after the party on Sunday and I’ll leave Monday, or maybe Tuesday morning.
  • I start TA’ing for intro-biology next week.  I think it’ll be kind of fun, but a lot of time because the class is on main-campus (not where I work) so getting there is a bit of a hassle.  Also, one of my committee members teaches a freshman-level cancer class and she has offered for me to participate with her and even do 1 or more of the lectures by myself.  So that will be a great experience.  Unlike poor Rachel, I’m not having to TA for the funds, my lab has money now – but we haven’t had money for the last year,  so I can sympathize!
  • I saw my Rheumatologist again this week and I told him that I think the medicine is starting to work but I’ve only seen about a 30% effect, so he upped my dosage to the highest dosage that he feels comfortable doing.  I hope it does the trick.  If my index finger is still swollen at my next visit he’s going to inject it with cortisone, doesn’t that sound like fun?
  • Sophie it doing better after all of her painful (and painfully expensive) problems last month.  She had a checkup this week and all looks good.
  • The trip to Greece this October is definitely green-lighted, that is, if I get my passport in time.  Lets all cross our fingers!
  • I present my research at our department’s colloquium this coming Thursday.  I am actually the first student to present this semester, which makes me feel gray-haired and old because its done in order of seniority.  Its hard to believe this will be my 5th colloquium – and my LAST!!!  And as usual I am harried doing last minute experiments (which never work) to get my presentation ready.

OK, that’s all I can think of.  I feel like I’ve just been so busy lately and its only going to get worse with classes starting this week!  I’ll try to keep up with it all.

Job August 17, 2007

Starting Tuesday, I will be working in a school district once again. No teaching this time. I will be an aide for the special education department at Edwardsville High School. My hours will be 0730-1430. Getting off midafternoon will be a good thing. Starting so early means that I will have to find a different time to swim.

Grandma Henkhaus August 17, 2007

Filed under: Life News, Uncategorized — Mom @ 1:28 pm

Grandma Henkhaus had another fainting spell on Thursday. She has had several – the first one being around two years ago. Aunt Kathy took her to the hospital where she was hooked up to a heart monitor. She had two more of these spells while she was hooked up. Basically her heart just stopped for a short while and then started up again. By studying the heart monitor info output, the doctors figured out what the problem was. The part of the heart that starts the beat with the electrical impulse has been working intermittently. Not good. So she now has a shiny new pacemaker installed in her chest – as of 0700 this morning. It should keep her heart humming right along. If you want to call her I would wait until she gets home – she can’t reach the phone in her hospital room. I don’t know for sure when she will be discharged. It will be either Saturday or Sunday. Aunt Maureen came out and will be staying until Sunday at Grandma’s house. We have had the pleasure of taking care of Fluffy for the past two days. She has been pretty good and Lucy is being very tolerant.

Deck Rebuild — Done!

Wall Anchors Installed — Done!

Mudjacking Garage Floor — Done!

Clean out Wedding Fund for Daughters — Done!

(Dad’s comment) The deck would be a wonderful place for a certain reception – sandwiches provided by Mom and Dad.

That just about sums it up. Lots of outgoing money this week. Not to mention that this was the hottest week yet this year. Around 100° F for the high all week. Power was also the most expensive it has been, naturally. All the power tools that have been plugged into the outside outlets this past week mean that the little power meter wheel has been flying around. Oops, I forgot we now have a digital meter. The numbers are changing so fast they are a blur.

The next thing happening is Will’s birthday party on 8/25/07. If you and Kurt can come, Rachel, that would be wonderful. Just let us know.

Lucy has mostly recovered from the sore back problem. But just to make sure she’ll stay OK, Dad and I are blocking the stairs with a gate. It’s a little aggravating to carry her up and down, but the alternative is not something I like to think on.

Kris and Jennifer are in KC this weekend. Kris is racing in the Tour of Kansas City. The little boys will be doing their races also on Sunday at the crit which is usually in Old Town Overland Park. I hope they take a picture or two.

Dad and I went to a wonderful restaurant in St. Louis for our anniversary last night. Kemoll’s. Very expensive, but great for a special night. I really hated the fact that I had to count points during the dinner. Of course, that is of my own doing.

Rachel, any more info on whether or not you’ll get to be a TA? I hope you get a job doing something you enjoy. Has Bucky gotten used to the new place? He didn’t look too upset even that first day. Of course, no stairs to peek down from.

Work on House August 8, 2007

Hey girls,

I assume that both of you are dealing with the excessive heat, as am I.  It has been unbelievably hot.  Ron and I were thinking that our electricity meter  would be whirring around pretty fast all this week.  Helping the speed of it would be the fact that lots of power tools have been plugged into our outdoor sockets for many hours this week.  We got the 4 wall anchors installed on Monday(concrete drills).  The deck builders have been here since Monday(power saws, and recharging bases for the 3 or 4 drills used for screwing in wood screws) and the mudjackers(more concrete drills) were here today to do their thing under the garage floor.  Things are looking good.  The deck should be done by Friday and we can park in the garage again without trepidation.   We’re excited.

Lucy has been showing signs of back trouble since Sunday, so no stairs or any jumping.  Lots of taking the dog up and down the front steps.  Good thing we have a baby gate for the top of the stairs inside.

Boo doesn’t have any more mats.  Her haircut was not as nicely done this time as last.  It will grow out soon enough, though.  I tried to get a picture of her, but she has been spending almost all her time under beds.
